AGATHA CHRISTIE (1891-1976)

We have chosen Agatha Christie because, in many novels, we recognise her complex imagination. However, she’s always logical. That’s a reason why we like Agatha. She’s written many fascinating books which are still read nowadays, because there is a lot of suspense and we never who the good guy is and who the bad one is.

Another reason is that the ways of killing of the murderers are always interesting and different. For instance, in the Ten Little Niggers, the murderer is one of the ten guests and we can’t guess who  the murderer is before the end.

The last reason is that she had a really mysterious life just like her heroes. We know that she appeared in many novels and she was close to her characters.

Her early life

Agatha Christie was born in 1891. Her mother was English and her father American. The latter died when Agatha was young. Her mother gave her an original education and encouraged her to write. When she was 16, she came in Paris to learn the job of singer but she has to abandon it.

A famous writer

Agatha Christie, with nearly 90 books translated in 20 languages, is one of the greatest literary successes of the twentieth century. She has written a lot of best sellers like the Ten Little Niggers. Her success began with the publication of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd in 1926. She continued and she is still read around the world with the Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile

She was millionaire many times thanks to her success, notably by the copyrights of her famous drama : the Mousetrap. A lot of her novels have been turned into movies. The Murder on the Orient Express made a record of enters.

A mysterious woman

Instead of this, Agatha Christie was also a woman and she had also a private life. She got married in 1914 with Archibald Christie. Her life was not always going so well because her husband, Mr Christie, was unfaithful to her.

On the third of December of 1926, when Archibald Christie was with the other woman, Agatha took her car and disappeared. The following day, the car was found empty. Ten days after, she was discovered in a little hotel in North Yorkshire. She had borrowed the name of her husband’s lover. The mystery about her death has never been solved…

While she was gone, she didn’t take care of her daughter. In 1928, Archibald and Agatha divorced.

Nevertheless, Agatha Christie got married in 1930 with an archaeologist, Max Mallowan. It’s interesting to see she worked with him in the Middle East on archaeological sites during the thirties. She was inspired by this experience for her novels. She once said : "an archaeologist is the best possible husband, for the older you get, the more interested he is in you." There were married for almost 50 years.

A special style

Agatha Christie is a very exciting writer because she is the best to create suspense and allow us to read her books to the end quickly. She has put the rules of the police novel. Agatha Christie has also invented  the murder in a confined place. We can remember all the characters A.Christie has created : Mr Poirot, Mrs Marple… Furthermore, she  always put  humour in her novels.

In 1976, she died but she added another mystery to her life. She published her last novel just after her death. In this novel, Poirot died too.
