The
commentary of documents in Economics and Social Sciences
|
The introduction to the commentary contains:
- An idea, which leads to the subject (historical fact, a current affair, a recent figure, a well known quotation…)
- A presentation of the subject
- A presentation of the documents used
- A presentation of the commentary plan, main ideas
The development
Two or three parts
Each part is divided into few paragraphs
Each paragraph contains:- An idea clearly expressed and explained
- One of few example(s)
The ideas are structured, organised, going from the most important to the less important.
A typical plan that you can always use if you don't know how to make a more relevant plan or if you want to be sure not to forget any important step of a commentary:
I- The facts observed in the documents
II- The explanation of those facts
But you can also organise the ideas differently, it depends on the subject and documents.
For example, the plan may be divided into different periods of time, or between different kinds of countries, of between the economic and the social aspect… but every time you always have to observe the facts and to explain them.
The conclusion contains:
- A rapid reminder of the subject and of the main ideas studied
- An idea, a question linked to the subject but which has not been solved.
During your oral presentation:
- You mustn't read nor recite
- Thus you only use a plan and main ideas (not written up)
- You must use statistics and clearly express and explain the meaning of figures
- Prepare a document and a plan to display
If it is a written commentary:
- I expect you to write down a title to each part and paragraph of the commentary,
- This title is a complete title that express the main idea of the paragraph or part.
